Karen Henderson, Hon. BA, CSA, SM
Founder - LTC Planning Network

As the result of a life changing 14-year dementia care experience, Karen founded the Long Term Care Planning Network, Canada's leading resource centre for aging and long term care planning and education. Her seminar series, web sites, newsletters and print and electronic tools are recognized as key international long term care educational resources.

In 2006 Karen became a Stephen Minister, then a Stephen Leader in her church, roles that have trained her to work with individuals struggling with aging, grief, loneliness, hospitalization or a terminal illness. She is a member of numerous national and provincial associations, advisory boards, coalitions and networks concerned with seniors' mental health, caregiver well-being as well as dementia and end - of – life care for all Canadians.

Karen has written for Health Canada's Writings on Gerontology and The Government of Ontario's A Guide to Programs and Services for Seniors.

Karen works with families to help them cope with the challenges of eldercare and in 2010 launched a Custom Care Planning Service for those 50+ who wish to ensure that long term care planning is a part of their own retirement plan.

Most recently, Karen created a series of print resources for families including Long Term Care: A Practical Planning Guide For Canadians with accompanying resource CD and It's never too early to start the conversation: A Guide For Adult Children & Their Parents.

Howard Berglas, CA, BComm, TEP
Philanthropy

Howard Berglas is a chartered accountant who has exclusively devoted his practice to income tax planning since 1985. He served as the senior tax partner of a mid-sized accounting firm in Montreal during the early 1990's. In 1995, Howard moved to Toronto and together with Michael Cadesky formed what is today the largest independent accounting firm in Canada restricting its practice to taxation. In 2001, Howard formed his own company specializing in developing proprietary tax plans for high net worth individuals. In January, 2006, Howard founded Ber Tov Capital Corporation to provide tax planning techniques to Canada's most philanthropic individuals and corporations. The cornerstone of Ber Tov's activities revolve around its Flow-Through Charity Initiative, which has encouraged increased donations and has assisted charities in their fund raising efforts.

Howard's duties at Ber Tov Capital include ensuring the tax compliance of the initiative, which has included the procurement of a tax ruling from Canada Revenue Agency. He also acts as a liason between donors, charities and their respective tax advisors to ensure maximum benefits are achieved as a result of the initiative.
